THE HISTORY OF KANDODO SHOPS IN MALAWI.?
By Inno Chanza
Frederick Lewis Maitland Moir was born in Edinburgh in 1852. He came to Blantyre in 1878 to open the African Lakes Company with the aim to stop slave trade.??
Frederick Moir was injured fighting Mlozi in Karonga alongside Lord Lugard in 1890 (trying to protect the Nkhonde). After his injury he was evacuated to Blantyre and never recovered fully. He was later using clutches/walking stick. ?
The natives used to call him kandodo after the injury. His elder brother John Moir was referred to as 'Mandala' because of the glasses he used to wear. ??
The Moir brothers spent their lives trying to develop Nyasaland. They opened shops through the country with one at Karonga under Fotheringham. They also built roads two of them being the present Blantyre Chikwawa road and Stevenson road in Karonga.??
The Kandodo shops and the Kabula stores were a legacy of Frederick Moir. ?
Dr Banda stayed in Edinburgh at John Moir's place when he was ill in 1939... the same year Frederick died.?
The Moir's assisted Dr Banda financially during his student days in Scotland.

North Korea has carried out another ballistic missile test days after a new president took office in the South.
The missile was launched near north-western Kusong, flying hundreds of miles then landing in the Sea of Japan.
It puts immediate pressure on South Korea's President Moon Jae-in, who campaigned on a platform of better engagement with the North.
A series of North Korean missile tests this year has sparked international alarm and raised tensions with the US.
Two missile launches last month both failed, with the rockets exploding just minutes into flight.
After hosting an emergency meeting of his security council, Mr Moon condemned the latest launch as a "provocation".
"The president said while South Korea remains open to the possibility of dialogue with North Korea, it is only possible when the North shows a change in attitude," his spokesman said.
New type of missile?
The nature of the launch is still being determined, but analysts have said the test shows a longer range than previously tested devices.
The Japanese defence minister said it fell about 400km (250 miles) from the east coast of North Korea and could be a new type of missile.
